IFJ KILLED LIST 1992

 Journalists Killed 1992

The IFJ List 1992

The following list is a preliminary survey of journalists killed in 1992. This list may not be exhaustive. The International Federation of Journalists counts all journalists killed while working or because of their work. The IFJ includes journalists who die in accidents and journalists who are targetted. Where doubts exist that a death is directly connected to a journalist's professional work, or where inquiries are continuing, this is noted in the text. Such cases are not counted at this stage. In monitoring attacks the IFJ works closely with other journalists' safety organisations such as the New York based Committee to Protect Journalists and the Montpellier based Reporters Sans Fronti‚res. These groups have slightly different criteria for counting journalists. The IFJ's 1992 total may change as a result of further information, which will be consolidated in March by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

CROATIA 3 Counted 1

nationality: Swiss

newsorgan: Agence Telegraphique Suisse, Local Swiss Radio Stations

sector: RADIO

date: 06/01/92

age: 27

source: Union Suisse des Journalistes Section du SSP, "The Independent", ATS

description: Wrtenberg had covered the war in Yugoslavia on and off since it began. On November 23 he filed his last story, a radio piece, and three days later joined the First International Croatian Platoon. In early January, three days after the 15th ceasefire had begun, he was killed in mysterious circumstances. The first reports stated that he had been killed by a snipers bullet but later reports said that he had been beaten and strangled to death. In order to have his body brought to Switzerland for an autopsy the Swiss government had to intervene. The IFJ was asked by its member union, the Union Suisse des Journalistes Section du SSP, to investigate this killing. The IFJ learned that Wrtenberg had not filed any stories since joining the Platoon nor did we find that he had made any arrangements or contacts with any media organisations. It was reported that he had handed in his press card although this was never confirmed. When interviewed by a reporter, shortly before he died, he expressed his wish to remain incognito to his family, friends and colleagues, and said that he had become a combatant in order to understand why the war was happening. It was reported also that he had been a mercenary in Angola and Namibia. The IFJ decided not to count him as a journalist until further material was uncovered. There is no proof that Wrtenberg was working on an investigative piece, however, there is proof that he was an active participant in the conflict, and no longer a neutral observer. Due to the on-going and extensive research into this death the IFJ has not yet decided to count Wrtneberg. NOT COUNTED
